In 2020, the Greene County community will host a large Breakfast On The Farm (BOTF) event to educate consumers about modern commodity agriculture and the way farmers care for their animals, protect the environment and produce safe, wholesome food. Impact survey results from other similar events indicated that over 60% of the attendees were first time visitors to a farm in 20 years and that the consumers significantly increased their trust in farmers in the key areas of care for environment, care for animals, and protecting water quality. ALL HOG EXHIBITORS: PLEASE READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PAYLEAN
The Greene County Agricultural Society (GCAS) voted at the January 2020 board meeting to ban the use of paylean (Ractopmaine) in all market hog projects at the 2020 Greene County Fair from birth to time of slaughter. This decision was based on two major issues:
Packers will be testing for and rejecting any hogs that have been fed paylean at any time during their life.
Union Stockyard will not accept any market hogs that have been fed paylean at any time during their life.

Hopefully you had an enjoyable holiday season and now it is time to begin making plans for the 2020 year. Part of this comes the time for private pesticide and fertilizer applicator recertifications.
If your license expires in 2020, you should have already received a letter in the mail from the Ohio Department of Agriculture stating that it is time to renew your license and pay your $30.00 licensing fee. Remember you can go ahead and send this fee to ODA now even if you have not yet completed the recertification training with OSU Extension yet.

Earn an OSHA 10 hour General Industry Card - specific to agricultural operations. There is no charge for this training and will be held at OSU Extension Office in Greene County. For more information see flyer.

Central State University and Ohio State University Extension, Greene County, are sponsoring a class on Jan. 27, 2020 to help pesticide applicators prepare for the state licensing exam. The class will be applicable to private and commercial applicators. For more information see flyer.

The 2018 Farm Bill allows the choice to enroll in ARC or PLC for 2019-2023. Enrollment for 2019 is currently open with the deadline set as March 15, 2020. Join OSU Extension and the Farm Service Agency for an informational meeting to learn about changes to the ARC/PLC, important dates and deadlines, crop insurance – supplemental coverage option, and using decision tools to evaluate program choices to make informed program decisions.

Join us to learn more about growing outside the traditional growing season for local foods and vegetables. The program will feature planting your fall garden and crop selection. This workshop will be for agricultural producers, backyard enthusiasts, community gardeners, and school teachers of all stages from beginner to experienced. Join OSU Extension Greene County on Monday, July 15 for a Solar Leasing 101 Workshop. The program will discuss topics such as if a solar lease agreement is right for your farm? Speakers will feature OSU Extension Specialists: Peggy Kirk Hall and Eric Romich. The program is designed to be an informational program about leasing farmland for utility-scale solar production. Topics include solar development trends, converting farmland to solar production, and key considerations.
