Currently the county has over 168,500 acres in roughly 820 farms.  This accounts for 62% of the Greene County land area.  Average farm size is 206 acres.

  • Major crop include corn (54,000 acres), soybeans (68,610 acres), wheat (2,989 acres), hay (8,087 acres), pasture (6,400 acres), vegetables (681 acres), and woods (10,000 acres.)
  • Farms with livestock continue to decline with fewer livestock being raised.  Those farms with livestock include cattle (218-6,998 head), hogs (35-13,258 head), sheep (48-2036 head), and horses (249 farms with 1,636 head.)
  • Other effects of an urbanizing county include more acreage devoted to fruits and vegetables and the subsequent flourishing of farmers’ markets.
  • Greene County has a large area of very productive soils with corn yields averaging 146.5 bushels per acre, soybeans averaging 50.2 bushels per acre, and wheat averaging 69.5 bushels per acre.*
